Finding your first customers on the corridor

How a first customer base is built when nobody knows your name or your European references.

What this guide covers

What works to start an activity between Tampa and the Space Coast: the weight of referral, local professional networks, accessible public tenders, and what European references are actually worth to a US buyer.

What exists

Referral

The dominant channel on the corridor. A buyer prefers a supplier introduced by someone they know, and that preference is stronger than in Europe, where formal tendering takes more space.

Chambers and local networks

Each county has its chamber of commerce, its sector associations and its executive groups. Membership is common and expected.

Economic development organisations

Counties fund agencies whose job is to attract and support businesses. Their services are free and largely underused by foreign founders.

European references

They reassure little if the buyer does not know the brands cited. A local reference, however modest, weighs more than a great European name unknown here.

What surprises people arriving from Europe or Quebec

Product quality counts less, at the start, than the ability to be introduced. A founder from a market where tendering structures selling discovers one where the relationship precedes it, and where having no network is paid in months of sales cycle.

Where it gets complicated

The corridor is not a city but a belt of six million people across two hundred miles. A presence in Orlando is not a presence in Tampa nor on the Space Coast, and the three ecosystems have their own networks.
